Lawn and fence care go hand-in-hand. Healthy lawns help maintain the strength and integrity of your residential fencing, not to mention that it makes your property look neat and beautiful. Each season comes with its own set of rules that you should follow to maintain the health and beauty of your lawn. With fall just around the corner, here are some tips for taking care of your lawn.
The Leaves
Your kids and pets probably love running through and jumping into a big pile of leaves, but if they stay on your lawn for too long, they can have adverse effects. Fallen leaves on the ground trap moisture and block sunlight. Both conditions can be detrimental for your lawn care efforts and cause it to be soggy and decaying. Be sure to rake or blow them away once they start to accumulate on your grass.
Cut Properly
Be careful not to cut your grass too low. As fall arrives and sets in, you should continue with your normal mowing routine until the first hard frost happens. In the meantime, cutting your grass too low leaves it vulnerable to dryness and makes it more difficult for the grass to withstand the cold. On the other side, if you let your grass grow too long, it can become matted develop fungi.
Continue Watering
Don’t think just because the weather is starting to change that you don’t have to keep up with your watering. Although there will be more dew in the mornings and rain, it might not be adequate for the root system of your lawn. Your grass needs at least one inch of water each week to remain hydrated and healthy.
Loosen the Soil
Keep the soil properly aerated; it prevents the soil from becoming too compacted, which blocks water and oxygen. Use a core aerator to punch holes into the soil to make sure that the right amount of water, oxygen, and nutrients can feed your grass.
