Ornamental iron fences are beloved by homeowners everywhere for their long-lasting appeal, durability, and classic image. However, they do have a nemesis—rust. If you have or are considering an iron fence, you’ll want to take the care into account. With simple care followed twice a year, your iron fence will stay rust free and beautiful for years to come.
Remove Rust and Debris
If there are any vines or high plants surrounding the fence, make sure to cut them down before you begin the process. This will make it easier to ensure you’re getting everything. Next, lay out tarps to protect the ground under and around your fence as well as to minimize the potential for dirt and debris to transfer to the fence. Using a wire brush scrub away at any areas with visible rust, then rinse the fence and allow it to dry.
Begin Repainting
Using a rust convertor on the areas that already have rust will help remove and prevent further issues. Once you’ve completed the application following the rules specific to the product it’s time to apply primer. Your primer will be applied in a thin coat and must be oil based. We recommend a spray primer for easy and even application. Once the primer is fully dry add a coat of oil-based paint for metal.
Clean And Repair
Every six months or so you should expect to give your iron fence a good cleaning with simple soap and water before applying a thin layer of protective wax. This will help protect the paints surface. If you notice that your fasteners or fence hardware have become rusted, it’s best to fully replace them. Finally, make sure to grease your gate hinges when they squeak and annually. This will ensure they do not dry out and allow for rust.
