Many homeowners like to live in cities populated by a lot of people and surrounded by many high rises. However, there are others that like to life near more four-legged and furry friends. For those that live a little closer to nature, you may enjoy the views but that doesn’t mean you want wildlife on your property. Here are some tips for keeping wildlife off your property with residential fencing.
Solid Fences
One technique for keeping wildlife off your property is through the use of solid fences. This means that the animals that you’re trying to keep away will not be able to see what’s on your property. Once you take away the visual stimulation, you take away the desire to investigate further.
Electric Fences
This option is more expensive than others and does require regular maintenance, but electric fences are known for being incredibly effective at keeping animals away. In order for them to work, you must first entice the animals to the fence so that they’ll know that the fence is “hot.” Use peanut butter to attract the animals to the fence. Once they feel the shock they’ll know that they are not welcome on your property.
Consider the Animals
A great tip for homeowners trying to keep wildlife off their property is to consider the size and types of animals that you want to keep away. For example, if there are deer that populate the areas near your home, then you’ll likely need to install a fence big and sturdy enough to keep them away. Since deer are able to jump, install an 8-10 foot fence or one that features a 45-degree slant. For cats, dogs, and other similarly sized animals, try a mesh fence at least 3-feet high. You must also use posts that are sturdy enough that a dog couldn’t knock them over. For animals that use tunneling tactics to move around, install a perimeter of wire mesh about 3-feet deep around the area that you’d like to protect. This will be especially helpful if you have a garden.
