You love your neighbor’s dog when he is adorably trotting down the street in your neighborhood, but you are not so fond of him when he is knocking against your fence! How can you prevent the neighbor’s dog from damaging your fence?
The Downsides
Most people prefer to get the bad news before the good news, so we will start there. Dogs are incredibly smart, especially when they are left in the backyard alone for long periods of time and need something to occupy themselves with. In the case of your neighbor’s dog, that might be your fence. Regardless of the fencing material that you use, there will always be a risk of your neighbor’s dog damaging your fence.
What You Can Do
Thankfully, there are some things that you can to do dissuade your neighbor’s dog from damaging your fence. Here are a couple ideas for fortifying your fence against dogs and intruders alike:
- After posting the appropriate warnings and notifying your neighbors, use an electric fence to give off a mild and slight shock to anyone poking around. This will instantly prevent your neighbor’s dog from poking around, as they will remember the shock (literally) they felt.
- Reinforce your fence posts so that they are at least three feet deep if your neighbor’s dog is a larger breed or skilled at knocking things over. If you have a wire or chain link fence, keep your eyes peeled for any holes in the fence or weak points where the dog has rammed the fence.
- If you have a wooden fence, make sure that no portions show any signs of rot or being dug underneath. If you add a baseboard to the bottom of your wood slatted fence, that will help the dog encounter resistance before they can get too far with their digging.
