When shopping for high security fencing or crash rated fences, you have undoubtedly heard a lot about K ratings. What exactly are K ratings and why are they important to take into account when choosing a crash rated fence?
K Ratings 101
First things first, a K rating is a crash test certification that is issued by the Department of State. K ratings can be issued to a variety of high security perimeter security devices including crash rated fences, gates, barriers, or bollards. The crash test measures the perpendicular impact penetration of a certain type of vehicle at a specific weight and speed. In simpler terms, the tests measure how well a barrier works at stopping different weights of vehicles at different speeds. K ratings typically refer to security barriers that stop vehicles weighing 15,000 lbs. from moving the barrier more than 36 inches.
There are several sub-ratings within the K rating class including K4, K8, and K12 classifications. K4 ratings refer to crash rated fences that stand up to vehicles traveling at 30 mph. K8 ratings are for security devices that withstand vehicles traveling at 40 mph. K12 ratings are used for impressive security devices that can withstand the force of vehicles traveling at 50 mph.
What Types of Places Use Crash Rated Fences?
Crash rated fences are used in many different commercial and residential settings to protect things inside and outside of the fence. High profile private residences frequently use crash rated fences to prevent fans or potentially dangerous people from entering the property. Crash rated fences are also used at power plants, federal and state government properties, military installations, chemical plants, and other commercial and governmental properties that need a little extra protection. Many properties use more than just crash rated fences and also incorporate K-rated bollards, drop arm barriers, wedge barriers, and capture barriers.
K-Ratings Don’t Mean You Sacrifice Style
Many people assume that K-rated products and crash rated fences are unattractive, simple, or threatening in appearance. While you can purchase K-rated things that do fit those criteria, natural barriers, decorative landscaping products, and beautiful entrance designs can help your property to be protected and pretty.
